Social Media and Online Dating
Verify the Identity.
With the rise of social media and online dating platforms, there has also been an increase in scams targeting unsuspecting individuals. These scams, often referred to as OSINT (open-source intelligence) scams, involve the use of publicly available information to manipulate and deceive victims. The perpetrators create fake profiles on social media and dating websites, using stolen or fabricated identities to gain the trust of their targets. Once trust is established, they exploit the victims emotionally and financially.
These scams can range from romance scams, where the fraudsters pretend to be interested in a romantic relationship, to financial scams, where they ask for money or personal information. It is important for users to be cautious and skeptical when engaging with people online, as not everyone may be who they claim to be.
